Ello Ello!!! Hope everybody is doing well. I still see the guild is kicking ass and taking names. Congrats to Keuven on becoming new guild leader, sorry i'm a little behind on the events of the guild. Well the reason for this post is that i'm wanting to get a new comp and i'm looking for any suggestions. I'm not looking to get the newest super scooby computer out there but looking for a good mid range computer. I've looked at the Alienware site and the comp that i put togather ran about $3,000 witch isn't too bad a price for me, so i'm willing to go as high as that. Any advice would be most helpful :D

Aldius can build you a VERY nic ecomp for that price, can you log in, or send him email?

Send an e-mail to aldius@comcast.net. Tell me if you want AMD or Intel and Nvidia or ATI.

If you click on this link, this is kind of a redo of an AMD system I did for a friend. The only difference he only wanted 1 500Gig HDD. This one comes with two in a raid setup, and a 74gb 10k rpm drive for your OS (makes windows run about 20% faster).

Gerinn's Wish List

This system does push the $3k envelope, but there's lots of room to work with. IE, this has SB Xfi sound, 7.1 speakers, etc. I refuse to install anything but Windows XP SP2b (Vista can suck my left nut). This price and about $75.00 is what it costs for newegg to ship it to you. I can build it for you, but it'd cost you about $300.00 more (which includes shipping to you). this system doesnt include a monitor. If you need a monitor, we can redo stuff in it to still keep it below 3k.

Anywho.

case and p/s are kind of overkill going with one thats a little closer to the requirmments of the system would pay for an Asus Striker board and an Intel quad core cpu other stats looked good. You may want to check Asus's forums for memory compatibility issues.

Are you planning on overclocking the system? If not the dominator series memory maybe a little over kill since the differences would be un-noticable to the human eye. I do over cloack systems for myself and use the higher grade meory that was designed to be pushed a little higher curently i have a E6600 intel cpu pushing out 5.2 Ghz it is very stable on a vista 64 bit platform. I did follow recommendations on Asus's forums for an aftermarker cpu cooler, north & south bridge cooler. also the EVGA "black pearl" maybe an option it is a water cooled video card. In alduis's wishlist the video card runs hot . this isn't an issue with a case with plenty of air flow In sli mode black pearl cards work best. note in sli mode ( 2 video cards) a south bridge cooler is Mandatory

The issue of xp vs Vista some people love it some hate it. if you choose vista Make sure you can get drivers for your parts. if you plan on intalling 3 gig of ram or less a 32 bit o/s id fine 4 gig or better you will need a 64 bit o/s.

if you are building the system take the time to read the forums for the various parts. Asus mother boards expect to have to flash the bios and do some manual settings in the bios for your memory. info for settings are on asus's forums and Corsair's site

AMD CPU's expect to have to download cpu drivers and do some tweeking for eq to run ( both xp and vista 32 bit versions)

Again All of the other parts on his list look great!

Rolladil
I have been building systems since 1986 (for resale) and a channel parner with Microsoft since 1993. I also beta test for several software and hardware companies. I was an AMD channel partner for about 2 weeks. I feel the same way about amd as alduis does about vista. For me I demand a higher quality than AMD can supply

Wow between both of your posts that's alot of info that i really don't understand. I'm not that heavy in the computer knowalage department. In answer to Ald i guess i would go with intell and nvidia. I don't know enough to really know the difference between intel and amd or nvidia and ati. All i know is that i have experience with intell and nvidia and have had no problems with either, but i am open to change. I know i said i'm willing to spend up to $3000 but if i can spend less that would be much better. I would say one of the areas we can knock that price down would be like the sound system. I really don't need 7.1 souround. I will buy the moniter, keyboard, mouse and speakers. I guess what i'm looking for is a better than average mid range comp that will support EQ with no probs and is easy to upgrade if and when need be. Ald i will email you my phone number and maybe we can get togater and hash this out, if you are willing to suffer a bunch of questions.

For a while, I refused to do anything with AMD. The Althon 64 X2's changed my mind. After building 5 years of only Intel stuff, I made an AMD computer, and really liked it. In my opinion the only board worth getting for the Intel stuff is the 680i, and everything I've seen leads me to believe it's still too buggy (like vista is).

As for what they're made for. AMD's have been made more w/ the gamer in mind, and Intel's are more for the other stuff. Don't get me wrong, you can run both on either, but all the stuff I've seen show AMD outperforms Intel where games are concerned. Where I'm mostly into the gaming scene, that's why I switched to AMD.

I have my two comptuers standing side by side and in running games, the AMD 4400+ outperforms the Intel 3.0g. Remember, as far as eq is concerned, I'm only running a 2200+ since EQ doesnt deal with the multiprocessor cores. But yet it's still faster than the true intel 3000.

Anyway.. I sent ya an e-mail. Just respond to it, and I'll give ya a call.

BTW - Roll. I've never had to tweak EQ to run on my dual processor using the AMD drivers. My WinEQ does that just fine. :)

Interesting eq payers forums in tech suport has a ton of threads about changes that need to be done for the AMD dual core cpus you may want to look at those. If your having broblems with a 680 board or vista just send me a tell i can walk you thru whatever problem you may be having.

I heard something about the "west bug" only being seen on AMD processors...any truth to that? My husband and I only run Intel processors on probably 10-12 different computers over the years and neither of us has ever seen the "west bug".

I'd be curious to see how many people use AMD and get the west bug versus how many people use Intel and get the west bug.

On a side note, I've always liked the computers my husband has built for me. I currently run Daine and Fox on P4 2.8GHz with 1G RAM which are old computers (no dual or quads here!), but they run EQ great and I've never had any issues. The only real lag I see these days is on Aprosis when he summons the adds. /shrug

My AMD system does amazingly well on every game I play except EQ. I get the west bug whenever I hang out in or move in/out of the Guild Hall. As shity as it is, I would never imagine gaming on a Intel CPU for myself.

AMD got in the CPU market by reverse engineering Intel chips. This is something AMD has made public more than once. The problem with reverse engineering is you need to change a few things in order to get a patent. AMD went as far as to try to hire people in the parking lot of Intel. In the Early days of AMD CPU’s they ran VERY HOT and was common to have a meltdown if your cpu fan failed. The CPU’s were over clocked from the start. In the early 90’s AMD was hot and heave trying to get channel partners. AMD went as far as to give us FREE motherboards and CPU’s to demo. Of those that I received the longest one lasted 2 weeks.
Just this year AMD offered people in the channel a cpu, motherboard and copy of vista ultimate for next to nothing. I wouldn’t waste the gas to drive across town to get it. Now if Intel made the same offer I would have drive to Chicago.
In over 20 years in the business I have never had an Intel chip go bad on me. Any company that can maintain the quality in their chips like Intel has will keep my business.

Don’t be fooled by claims it was made for gamers. Tell me one thing it does to make it better for gamers? The Made for gamers is an advertising gimmick and nothing more. Their chips are cheaper in price, I guess if you don’t have to invest into R&D you can do that.
